Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is widespread and has a deleterious effect on soybean yield and seed quality; it can be controlled readily by growing resistant cultivars. Incorporating SMV resistance into adapted cultivars can be accomplished with standard breeding procedures. The choice of a resistance source is important because some sources have resistance to only a few of the eight strain groups of SMV, G1-G7 and Cl4, Which have been reported. The strain groups can be differentiated by resistant, mosaic or necrotic reactions on seven cultivar groups having resistance to the G1 type strain. These host-pathogen interactions suggest that there are several genes conditioning resistance. The inheritance of resistance has been studied in seven cultivars. and genesymbols have been designated for two loci, The dominant gene in PI 96983 and the susceptible allele have been designated Rsv rsv, respectively. The resistance gene in Ogden is at the Rsv locus, but is recessive to Rsv and dominant to rsv, so is designated rsv. The dominant gene Raiden, Rsv2, is at a separate locus. Marshall. Kwanggyo and York also have single dominant genes for resistance that are at the Rsv locus, but dominance relationships are not yet clear. In genetic studies, plants with the necrotic reaction have been classified as resistant by some authors and susceptible by others. Extensive data indicated that heterozygous plants frequently exhibit the necrotic reaction and should be classed with the resistance segregants. Many of the available ...
